Sidenotes

This release features 6 classic horror movies and one episode of a Swedish studio debate TV-series called Studio S which ran back in the 1970s.

Studio S was a TV-show where a live studio audience debated on various topics and on December 2nd of 1980 they ran a rather infamoues segment entitled “Who needs video?”.

The bottom line of the discussion was that the recent VHS craze which was sweeping the nation had suddenly made it to easy for young children to get a hold of horror movies and worried parents were brought on the show demanding that the films were taken out of circulation or even that the video format be outlawed entirely to combat the problem.

During the broadcast of the show several clips from popular horror films were shown and among the most notorious of these films was The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. To further scare up the parents the Studio S reporter was sent out to a local school where he interviewed young children on camera and asked them if they had seen any of these movies.

The children all claimed to have seen these kinds of movies several times and mentioned specific details of what types of gore and violence they had witnessed. This particular segment of the show is said to have been staged and was later accused of being a hoax as two of the children from the original clip came on TV many years later saying that they had in fact bin bribed by the reporter and told what to say as they had no knowledge about any of the films mentioned.

The Studio S program brought on a nation wide moral panic in Sweden and several movies were banned because of this single event. Within days of the broadcast a rapid chain of events began, which included rental store police raids (hunting down rental contracts to see how many horror movies had been rented out to young children) and several VHS tapes being confiscated.

And so in 2010, 30 years later (to the day) of the original broadcast, Studio S Entertainment (a company mainly focused on the horror genre and a company which also bluntly stole it's title from the infamous debate program) has re-released 6 out of the 7 movies used as examples in the original Studio S broadcast (and if you havn’t figured it out THAT is the box set I’m reviewing here).
