Packaging / Design

As allways, rating the packaging is a matter of taste as much as anything but I for one think that this little "cd-box" is quite an eye catcher. It's a rather unusual format (outside of japan) yet despite the regular cd jewel case, which some might find a bit low tech for this day and age, I think that this hard slip-case box really looks great.

And the graphics for the inserts and the little book are just wonderful. The white text done for the front cover is slightly glossy while the black is not (it's pretty much identical to the cover-design of the R1 special edition). It's a shame that they didn't do some kind of embossing for it but in the end it's a very nice choice even if we've seen the artwork so many times before.

Disc contents / Extras

These discs appear to be an almost direct port from R1 2 disc set done by New Line. The only differences I can find are that of subtitles and audio options. The first disc carries the same DTS and DD 5.1 tracks as the R1 but it replaces the English 2.0 track with a japanese one (go figure).

And as for the extras, the line-up appears identical as well, except for the addition of 3 trailers on disc 1 and the lack of (?) the dvd-rom features (They might be on here but I can't seem to find them).

All the menus seem very simular to the R1 as well but they CAN be presented in japanese if one wishes to do so.

Even though this release is a few years old it really holds up as one of the more genuine and well made special editions I've seen (which is just what I think about the R1 version as well). It's just a great edition for a great film, and that's all there is to it.

Sidenotes

This box set was released in 2001 and has since been replaced by another 2 disc edition which appears to be different only in packaging (It's presented as a regular 2 disc digipack in an embossed sleeve).

This square box version originally came with a red paper-sleeve (this was not included with my second hand copy) and if you're having trouble finding it, here is the original product link for Amazon.co.jp.
