Packaging / Design

This set feels like a very genuine design and a very complete package. The replicated cardboard box seen in the film is absolutely beautiful (and looks a lot better than the box found in the Korean ultimate edition for Oldboy imo).

The box is really sturdy but the inside feels somewhat unpractical. The dvd box set is fited into a couple of tight polystyrene type holders.

This is a good idea but the fitting is way to tight and I actually hade to order 3 sets before I eventually got one that didn't have slipcase damages on it (the cardboard was creased and folded from the initial insertation of the box when it was assembled at the factory).

However, if you recieve an undamaged set (which you probably will) then the packaging will most likely be the least of your worries. The digipack and slipcase are also really well made, though I hardly see a six-piece foldout as the most clever choice for a set with that many discs.

The slipcase comes with a partually metallic like pattern and cut outs for the front which I think is really cool.

I'm not crazy about the "cartoonish" arm and gun artwork but it's still an OK design and so far probably the best one can get if you're looking for all three films in one set.

The hammer (bottle opener) is a great idea but this hammer doesn't look anything like the one in the film. Still, it feels pretty decent and even comes with a small Oldboy engraving at the top.

And last but not least, we get three good looking photos and a foldout poster of the Sympathy For Lady Vengeance gun blueprint.

Disc contents / Extras

This set comes with 2 disc special editions for all three films and packs a pretty decent punch for anyone who's looking for an english friendly edition. All three editions appear totally different from the previously released Tartan editions so it's not just a question of a clever re-packaging either.

Sympathy For Mr Vengeance comes with brand new and longer extras than the older 2 disc from Tartan. The extras on disc 2 run for over 1 hour and feel like a pretty fulfilling line-up.

OldBoy has a totally different set of extras in comparison to the old UK edition, with the massive Autobiography of OldBoy documentary running for over 3 hours! It does however lack a lot of stuff from the old UK release as well as numerous other editions of this film, so if you're a major fan, you'll probably want to pick up more than one edition of this film.

The discs for Sympathy For Lady Vengence are probably the best english friendly discs you'll find for this film and it's also also one of the few editions to include the director's cut (aka the "fade to black & white" version). Sadly, this release only has the director's cut version and not the regular theatrical cut. Furtheremore: the film suffers from audio synchronisation problems but there is a program set up to deal with this issue (please see sidenotes below).

All in all, this box set is by far the best compilation for all three films if you don't understand korean. All the extras have english subtitles and with this said, it's a pretty darn good set.

Sidenotes

The digipack slipcase box incorrectly lists Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance having a running time of 121m.

Sympathy For Lady Vengeance suffers from synchronisation problems on the latter part of the disc. Tartan Video are aware of this error and have a disc replacement programme running. You can phone the number at the bottom of the packaging and you'll get info on how to get your disc replaced.

The packaging incorrectly lists the audio commentary on the alternate scenes (on Sympathy For Lady Vengeance) as being optional.

Cindy: How much I am charging? You mean to sell it? I'm afraid there must be a missunderstanding. This is only an informative website based around review. It's not a shop so the items are not for sale.
