Packaging / Design

This release comes with a glossy style slipcase and a matte digipack. The overall design is pretty allright but being a 4 disc set, the fold out layout feels a bit flimsy (but that's just because I generally don't like fold out digipacks for more than three discs - I mean it's not MORE flimsy than any other digi with the same disc count).

So... yeah, go get it!

Disc contents / Extras

This release appears to include the same 3 discs as the old Modstrilogin box set but also adds a fourth bonus disc to the collection. Discs 1-3 are presented with both English and Swedish menus and also come with optional English and Swedish subtitles for the most part (see disc specs for more info).

The film about Modstrilogin is a very nice making of and it's been divided into three segments focusing on each part of the trilogy in a separate fashion.

For some reason that I can't quite figure out, the same making of is also presented as a bonus on the fourth disc, but now it's presented as a single film and without subtitles... but apart from this it's exactly the same material.

Each film comes with a commentary track by director Stefan Jarl and one of the films main characters; Kenta Gustavsson. These commentaries are obviously in Swedish only and no subtitles are provided for this feature.

Disc 2 includes an old radio broadcast from 1979 featuring an interview with Olof Palme - the Swedish prime minister at this point in time. The interviewer is Lars Ragner Forsberg and he talks to Palme about the film and various aspects of the entire project. This is just an audio featurette and sadly there is no subtitle track available.

The bonus disc is a nice addition but sadly, NO subtitles are included on this disc (even though the cover states that Swedish should be available). The film about Modstrilogin presented on disc 4 is (as I already mentioned) just a combined version of the the three parts we've already seen on disc 1, 2 and 3 and so this featurette adds nothing new and is really rather pointless.

The short film Epilog is a minor fourth installment meant to conclude the trilogy. This is not very long but it's still an interesting piece that provides a worthy closure to the project.

The Award Winning Films of Stefan Jarl is a documentary about the filmmaker himself and a look back at his various films.

All in all a pretty good set despite the English unfriendly nature of the extra bonus disc.

Sidenotes

The cover incorrectly states that the fourth disc is presented in an aspect ratio of 1:85:1 with Swedish subtitles when in fact, all the material on disc 4 is in 4:3 fullscreen and comes without subtitles.
