Packaging / Design

It's a real treat once you discover an edition that just wows all your needs and expectations. And the Japanese Ultimate Series will usually do that with absolute certainty. In the case of The Day After Tomorrow, this film usually comes in a very simular "3D" slipcase all over the globe. However, by chosing this high class japanese release you get a really glossy style digipack instead. Wrapped around it is a very well made plastic slipcase with white detail printing. I just love plastic slipcases, it's just so fresh and unusual. The only thing missing from this case would be some kind of booklet for the film. But on ther other hand, it doesn't strike me as something I'm going to miss.

Disc contents / Extras

Although this edition doesn't have anything to special going for it (disc wise) if you comapare it to the other SEs. As far as I can tell the only exclusive feature on these disc is the music video on disc 1. It's called More Than A Million Miles and it's preformed by a japanese group actually called Day After Tomorrow (Don't ask, cause I really don't know why). Anyway, the lyrics are in japanese and and this audio track aperantly replaces the audio during the end credits of the film (if you play it with the Japanese audio track).

Anyway, the extras on this set are still very good even if they're be no means exclusive to japan. There's a bunch of interesting documentaries spanning between both the film world and the problems of the real world featuring global warming and such. There's 10 deleted scenes as well as 2 feature length commentaries. All in all this set is pretty stacked but on the downside most of the menus are in japanese which makes it a bit hard to orientate yourself. It should be noted that the main sections are usually displayed in english so you do get some idea of what you're whatching (For instance: "Deleted Scenes" is written in english but the individual titles of the scenes are written in Japanese). It's on the verge of an 8 in my book but the japanese menus drop it down to a strong 7 instead.
