Packaging / Design

This release is presented in 2 keepcase neatly packaged within a thin metal slipcase box. The tin box is very slick and not embossed at all. There are some sharp edges as the metall is sort of "bent" into the shape of a box. This is a bit unusual but certainly gets the job done well and also makes for very sturdy and not very damageable tin.

There's a small hole on the top and bottom side of the tin. I couldn't care less about this but some people might find it disturbing. Seems to be a technical thing keeping the tin together as far as I can tell.

Also included in this set are a set of exclusive postcards and a booklet. Both of which are presented in a clear plastic pocket.

Disc contents / Extras

This release appears to be identical to the R1 3 disc special edition but the gorgeous menu system (same design as the R1) is presented entirely in japanese, which makes it kind of hard to navigate.

(As all the features are the same I'll use the same review as I did on the R1)

David Fincher usually has had a lot of involvement with the production of the dvd in the past (or so I've heard) and this release has definitely gotten some major attention as well, judging from the features.

There's a massive count of three 3 feature length commentary tracks and a whole bunch of insightful extras.

Surprisingly enough there are no deleted scenes, which pretty much seems like it's mandatory these days... but then again, there's so much else going on here that I'm not particularly sad about this.

And before wrapping this thing up I have got to mention the wonderful menu system (which I think looks pretty much the same on all 3 disc special editions of this film) - This is presented as a 3D blueprint of the house which zooms in and out like a neat little camera trick depending on what submenus you choose.

So in conclusion; a very well stacked set of discs but they're pretty much identical to the other 3 disc editions released in other countries. And so, with this said, there's not a lot to make this release stand out above the others, but it's still well worth it if you're a fan of the film.

EASTER EGGS

On disc 2, enter Pre-Production and continue into the Prep section. Highlight the Safe Cracking School option and press right. A small icon will appear and you can now press enter to see a featurette with security expert Gavin De Becker talking about his role on the film (06m 04s).

On disc 2, enter Production and highlight the Main Menu option and press right to highlight a hidden symbol. Press enter for a featurette with special effects coordinator Joe Viskocil entitled Jodie Foster Breaking A Glass Mirror (02m 13s).

On disc 3, enter Visual Effects and continue to the last page in the section. No highlight the menu entry Arm On Fire and press right to highlight another symbol. Press enter to see a few tests of the CGI fire. (01m 48s)

Sidenotes

The barcode is only presented on the paper wrapper.
