Discjunkie's Comments
Packaging / Design
This release comes in a 2 disc hardcover box with a somewhat glossy exterior. The surface has some slight texture to it and feels sort of crackled (like dried paint or such). This is not a totally uncommon typ of surface but I don't think it's very widely used for these particular cases.
All in all I think this cover design actually looks better than the re-issued XT limited edition covers but that's just my personal opinion.
To be honest I expected more from this release as this edition is oftenly described as having a skin-like quality to it.
Disc contents / Extras
This release comes with pretty much the same features as we see everywhere else. There's nothing to exclusive to elevate this above the rest but it does include the lengty Family Portrait documentary, which is obviously a big plus.
Other than that, the audio isn't the best and image quality has improved a lot since this edition came out. So if you're looking for superior image and audio I would suggest checking out some of the later releases as there's a whole bunch of editions out there and several of them that should rank a lot higher than this one.
All in all I'd say it's still worth considering for the packaging alone.
Sidenotes
The cover states the aspect ratio as 1:85:1 but from what I can tell it's more like 1.78:1 (feel free to confirm the exact ratio cause the whole thing looks a bit odd if you ask me).
This release is the original collector's edition version from XT Video and as far as I know this was not limited to a specific number.
The discs in this set are featured in 4 different editions. There is the original collector's edition from XT Video, presented in a small hartbox, and then there are 3 limited edition large hartboxes with alternate cover art (each of these 3 cover variations are numbered and limited to 666 copies). Please see more info on these editions below.
