Packaging / Design

I'm gonna stick my neck out on this one and actually give it an eight. Because let's be fair - how often do you see a collectable VHS set? Really?

I mean look at it! Sure, it's just a plastic box and the VHS sleeve isn't all that exciting. But the snowglobe! Oh man, what an absolutely AWESOME idea!

And that's basically what this box set is all about. A collectable, numbered, limited edition snowglobe of horror. Because let's think about it, how often do you see a snowglobe with something bad happening inside it?

Dare I say never? Well, not anymore, because the Coen Brothers havn't only changed the way we look at movies, now they've also changed the way we look at snowglobes. Period.

And for that I think this set is worth getting. If you're just looking to see the movie, there are several other formats that are both better and easier to find.

Out of the two sets I'd say this re-issue is in fact way cooler than the first one. The only real difference is the new scene in the snowglobe but what's even more interesting is the fact that they've replaced part of the "snowflakes" with red snowflakes to give the look of blood flying around :) I mean really, who more wicked can you get in terms of snowglobes?

The new snowglobe features the infamous woodchipper scene, which makes the whole "blood snow" effect even creepier. Personally I really think this gives it the slight edge but I imagine a true collector would want both versions anyway.

VHS contents / Extras

This is one of the few VHS sets that actually has special features included on the tape, in the form of exclusive outtakes and a theatrical trailer. I don't actually own a VHS-player anymore so I havn't had the possiblity to check if these outtakes are in fact exclusive or if it's something that one can find elsewhere. Eitherway, it still get's a bit of extra points for this bonus.

Seeing as this is a VHS and the quality of image and sound can in no way be compared to the newer formats (I mean at the time of it's release this was probably considered state of the art but it seems pointless ranking this in comparison to the DVDs). Never the less, I guess I have to give it something, so in relation to what VHS tapes were like when this set was issued, I guess I could warrant it at least a 7 due to the supposedly exclusive outtakes.

Sidenotes

This box set has been released twice. This is the re-issued limited edition box set. It features the same VHS as before but with a new snow globe design featuring the infamous woodchipper scene as aposed to the earlier box set which featured a snow globe with Marge kneeling by a dead body in the snow. The new version also replaces some of the snowflakes with red snowflakes to give the impression of blood flying in the air.
