Packaging / Design

OK, what's wrong with it? Well, at first I was pretty dissapointed with this set for a number of reasons. First off, there's a small piece of plastic (catch, hook, snag, I'm not sure what the proper term is) that locks a secret hatch in the back of the Predator bust (this is where the dvd digistack is stored, but we'll get to that later). Now, this piece was broken off when the set arrived and so I can't say if this mechanism works or not. But in my honest opinion, even if it had been intact, it's one of those things that I think would have broken pretty fast either way as it doesn't feel to well fitted for this purpose.

Secondly, the digistack comes without any kind of slipcase or protection, plus the backside of my copy even had air-bubbles lodged under the paper (!!!). I don't know. It just doesn't have the same quality feel as the Alien head and it's digistack did.

And thirdly, the bust doesn't have an kind of weight to it, or atleast not the kind of weight you'de expect, which makes it a bit more cheap in feel...

So why the hell do I rate this as a fucking nine!?

Well, in all honesty, the head is actually quite nice. The details and the paint job is quite rich (not to say absolutely smashing!) and the look of it next to the Alien head is actually quite superb, even if the Alien head comes with a lot more clever storage idea for the discs.

And lastly, it's a fucking Predator head in your living room! The only thing that could have made this a perfect 10 would have been if the damn mask would have come off to reveal the face, but I guess we can't have it all sometimes, can we?

Disc contents / Extras

Before we begin I just want to clerify that the 6 discs are devided so that there's 2 disc for each film (a movie disc and an extras disc). Predator has discs 1 & 2, Predator 2 has discs 3 & 4, and AVP has discs 5 & 6. And now, let's continue.

So what do I thin about this so called ultimate collection?...

Well, it's good, it's old, but it's also as good as it gets so why are we complaining?

Allright, here's MY main concern; the discs in this set (not counting the 2 Alien vs. Predator discs) are exactly the same as the ones previously released, which makes all the three films very differently designed when it comes to menus and disc art. (I wouldn't have cared to much about the first two films not being updated if they had just edited the menus and disc art a bit to give it a bit more of coherrent feel).

But once you judge the extras for what they are (like we did when they first arrived in their original 2 disc special editions), the setup is pretty fair and I can't really say that I'm that dissapointed. OK, so the original Schwarzegger film still looks dirty and there's a lot of grain and crappy bits at times but this collection is pretty much as top of the line as we can expect right now.

However, taking a look at the AVP discs I realise that these are actually not the same as the previously released "Extreme edition" discs. These are actually 2 new discs and would most likely be classified as the "Unrated Edition" discs (but then again there is now release called "Unrated Edition" in the UK)...

OK, the bottom line is this: AVP comes in two version on this set and it's exactly the same versions as you'll find on the R1 "Unrated Edition" - Namely the original PG-13 version (without the Antarctica opening sequence) and fully extended version (aka Unrated - including 8 min of new footage edited into the film - that's right, not just the new opening but all the unrated scenes as well!).

And as for the AVP special features they appear pretty much the same as the R1 Unrated features (except for some differing preview trailers).

All in all; you do the math. But this set seems totally allright by me.

Sidenotes

There are three different cuts of Alien vs. Predator. There's the PG-13 version, the extended version (featuring only a new opening sequence), and the unrated version (featuring even more scenes and more gore).

Now, the unrated version had (at the point of this release) not been seen on dvd in the UK but it was availble in America.

Strangely, this set includes the PG-13 version and the unrated version (the same versions included with the "unrated edition" released in America).

Still, the menus label the unrated version as just "Extended version", which causes a great deal of confusion.
